ZIPBOX Media: Tips on How to Manage Your Digital Storefront

Paul Wright - Tuesday November 8th 2011

Launching a website is one thing, filling it up is another

A very basic website is a lot like a business card or a phone book listing. It will help people find you and lend a little bit of credibility to your operation. But your website can do much more than that.

Tell us about yourself – Many potential customers want to know who you are before deciding whether to do business with you. A business needs an “About” page that explains your credentials and experience and the company’s history. For a songwriter’s website, this is the Bio page.

Photos – They really are worth a thousand words apiece, so use plenty of them on the site. Most digital cameras have good quality, though you may need to use photo editing software to crop or adjust images. Post photos of yourself, your workspace, your dog – whatever will show people what you’re about. Don’t use stock photos of models – they look phony.

News – Keep your website current with the latest news and upcoming events. If your website is for a band or a church, for instance, you need a calendar of upcoming events. This is a good time to delegate. For example, your spouse or partner keeps the calendar current while you work on the rest of your website.

Blog – A great long-term strategy for attracting potential customers to your site is having a blog. You write articles with useful information – like the article you’re reading right now – to attract readers through Google and other search engines. Read this to learn more about business blogging. Out of space – Some small businesses can’t add very much content to their websites because their hosting company allows them only a few web pages. If you run into this limitation, shop around for a company that allows you enough web pages. ZipBox Media offers an unlimited number of pages, which should be enough for your site.

Keep it up to date – You need a website that you can easily update yourself. You won’t keep your site up-to-date if you have to keep asking your website hosting company or the pasty-faced teenager next door for help. If you struggle to update your website, shop around for another hosting company that has better technology – like ZipBox Media’s Easy Page Creator – and better customer service.

Out with the old – Look through your site on a regular basis and remove material that is out of date. Telling customers about a sale that ended eight months ago will hurt your credibility.

Sell – This is why you’re in business. Your website should allow you to sell your products or downloads without the hassle of dealing directly with credit card companies. If you want to sell but your website doesn’t have that capability, switch to a web hosting company like ZipBox Media that gives you that option.
